Quite wealthy himself, Pieter's took an interest in lives of the peasants and his paintings have left us with a greater understanding of the experiences of the poor in Europe, and especially the Netherlands, in the 1500's.Pieter Bruegel is know as the Elder to distinguish him from his son, Pieter Bruegel who was also an artist.
