Schonberg recently wrote: ‘“There was something in the personality of this wild man from Russia that immediately put an impress on the age. People could despise his music, could hate it, could deride it—but they could not dismiss it.” Musically lean and athletic, it was a personality that flowered early. Prokofiev wrote a three-act opera when he was nine, and studied with Reinhold Gliere at the age of eleven; five years later he was studying with Liadoff and Rimsky-Korsakoff at the Petrograd Conservatory. He became best known in this country for the charming musical fairy-tale for children, Peter and the Wolf (1936), written to demonstrate the instruments of the orchestra. A musical humorist equally capable of mild whimsy or biting satire, Prokofiev’s career underwent some violent ups and downs before his final acceptance by the Russian government. (In 1943, the authorities awarded him the Stalin Prize. In 1948, they denounced him for “fostering bourgeois tendencies in his music.” Then, in 1951, after he had apparently “reformed,” they once again awarded him the Stalin Prize.) Prokofiev achieved a large body of work in his lifetime—well over a hundred compositions of all types, including ballets, operas, film scores, symphonies and chamber works. He seems to have been one of those born artists for whom inspiration was a factor to be coped with, rather than waited for. Of his work habits, Time magazine reported: “He composes with the cold matter-of-factness of a mathematician, and keeps stacks of copybooks in which he hoards themes for future compositions. He jumps from bed to jot one down; they occur to him while taking walks, and especially while riding trains.” Apart from his unquestioned satirical gifts, Prokofiev was universally recognized as a composer who boldly, and with considerable success, merged classical and modern elements in many of his works. (continued on the back cover) One of the world’s foremost conductors, Eugene Ormandy has been permanent conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1936. He was formerly conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (1931 to 1935). Ormandy has been widely hailed for his readings of contemporary scores, as well as for his classical interpretations.
