Description: PATROL TORPEDO BOAT PT-305 "Sudden Jerk" US Navy cover with a postmark from Houston, TX dated July 24, 1995. Blue printed photo on cachet #2640 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. Cover franked with 29 cent PT Boat stamp # 2765f. Cover on an Archive Quality Envelope without gum on flap. Cover with a DIY matte and 5x7 frame, makes a fine gift! PT-305 was built by Higgins Industries in New Orleans. This 78 foot (original length)patrol torpedo boat was commissioned in 1943 and operated out Bastia, Corsica in the Mediterranean during the WW II. She fought German flak lighters, Italian MAS boats and enemy armored barges. She sank three German ships. The proud vessel returned to USA mainland in April 1945 and was sold to become an oyster fishing boat. Her three aviation fuel guzzling engines were replaced with two diesels. Thirteen feet of her stern was removed to avoid the regulation that boats over 65 feet must have a USCG licensed captain. In 2001 she was acquired by a Texas museum, and in 2006 was transferred to the National WW II Museum in New Orleans. She was restored by volunteers in the museum's Kushner Restoration Pavilion. They spent ten years and 100K hours on this difficult project. Now fully restored, this fine PT Boat started giving tours on Lake Pontchartrain on Dec 10th, 2016. In 2023 it was reported, she is back at the museum for repairs and will become a permanent exhibit in the museum. (also see covers for PTF-26 and PT-109) Check out my other items! These items make fine USN gifts when mounted on a colored matte and placed in a 5x7 picture frame. Free US Shipping!
