Description: The photo community seems to be regaining awareness of the excellence and photo-historical importance of Ernst Haas’ photography, with new collections coming out recently of his photography of New York City, his still photographs from movie sets, and so on. For some reason, certain critics and photo historians often miss the fact that as a pioneer of color photography as an art, Haas was way ahead of later-comers like William Eggleston and Stephen Shore. The Museum of Modern Art hosted “Ernst Haas: Color Photography” in 1962. It was 14 years after that that MOMA put on the much-noted “Photographs of William Eggleston.” Haas was a great artist in both color and black & white; a pioneer of motion blur to create a sense of motion in still photographs of athletes, dancers, wildlife, motor vehicles; as well as an early master of color photography as art generally. His book The Creation was a highly-praised and popular accomplishment, still in print. He was also an eloquent writer about the present and the future of photography as art. This item is rare, long out-of-print, unusual, perhaps unique. For years, Hull Printing in Connecticut was much-applauded for the quality of its printing for photographers’ prints and photo books. This “book” is a promotional and educational brochure, using reproductions of proofs and finished prints of images (any number of them iconic) by Haas in order to demonstrate different printing types and techniques – monotones, halftones, duotones, etc. The title of the publication is A Printing Potpourri Wherein Are Shown Various Techniques of Reproducing Artwork. It is a first edition published on January 1, 1995. The reproductions on the inside pages are of black & white works, the ones on the front and back covers are of color images. If you can find another copy of this item elsewhere, it’s almost certain that it won’t be in the mint or near mint condition of this one. You can pretty much see that condition for yourself from the eight high-quality photographs of the item provided in this listing.8x 10 ¼ “, 16 pages (black & white reproduction inside, color images on the front and back covers). This is truly a collectible.
