This diminutive 9" in length Baby Red Breasted Merganser Hooded Drake was realized by the well-listed, highly coveted & widely collected sporting duck decoy artist John Paxson of Back Bay, Virginia, located on the outer shores of Virginia's Atlantic coastline. It's stamped 'R. B. D.,' with the year (19)'75 on its baseplate. Not only is the carving & ensuing form exceptional but so is the paint. Amber colored glass eyes finish the piece, making this particular sporting duck decoy thoroughly believable. It's an action-packed bird by John Paxson & one where a lot is happening & going on in a very small space. The surface of the decoy has intentional, layered, mottled colors that intermingle with one another. An old affixed white paper label with identifying writing is fastened to its underside. An amazing, very distinct vintage American decoy. The horsehair tufts of hair on the back of the decoy's head are wild.
