Description: Justinian I | AE Half Follis Reference: SB 165 Date: 538-539 CE Obverse: D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG; diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed facing bust, holding globus cruciger and shield; cross to right Reverse: Large K; cross above, A/N/N/O to right; XII (regnal year 12 = 538-539 CE) to left; B below Mint: Constantinople Size: 32.1 mm Weight: 10.47 grams Ex. Vitangelo w/ tag. At the height of his imperial achievement in 538 CE, Justinian reformed the bronze coinage. In doing so he increased the size/weight of the follis and its derivative denominations from the earlier Anastasian standards. The reform served as potent economic propaganda but the increased sizes and weights were not sustainable and over time the follis shrunk back to its original size. The most profoundly recognizable coins of this reform are those struck in its first year, regnal year 12 (this coin). This half follis is one such example and is roughly the size of folles found under Justin II (although still lighter). Some corrosion on the obverse and reverse.
