Description: Roman Imperial ae Sestertius Coin of Nero PORT of OSTIA Obverse : Laureate bust of Nero right Reverse : Port of Ostia: six ships within the harbor; at the top is a pharus surmounted by a statue of Neptune; below is a reclining figure of Tiber, holding a rudder in right hand and dolphin in left; to left, crescent shaped pier with portico, terminating with figure sacrificing at altar and with building; to right, crescent shaped row of breakwaters or slips 34 millimeters wide19.3 grams I have tried for many years to get one of these and I finally succeeded. This is just such a very cool coin. The reverse strike seems a bit weak and while there are different variations that show between 7 and 13 ships in the harbor. ( I don't know how they could ever fit 13 ships on a coin like this but that is another story) Anyhow, there could be 7 ships on this coin and because the strike is weak , I just can't see it. This coin came with an old Harlan Berk flip information sheet which i will enclose to the purchaser of this coin. On his flip info , Harlan Berk reports the coin as an unpublished variation. Either way it feels good to have finally gotten one of these. I am actually tempted to keep this coin for as long and hard as I have searched for one but I did decide to list it.
