Description: With Santa Claus illustrations by political cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840 - 1902), this antique McLoughlin Brothers children's Christmas picture book is a rare find.Created as political propaganda for the Union during the American Civil War, Nast's "Santa Claus and his Works" drawings first appear in the December 25, 1866 issue of Harper's Weekly. This circa 1870 McLoughlin Brothers publication includes six full-page chromolithographs of Nast's Santa illustrations. The vintage Christmas story book has advertising on the back for additional McLoughlin Bros. books including their Big Picture Book for Little Children series, paper dolls, and board game. This is a genuine antique 19th-century publication with a softcover. The antique children's book shows wear including soiling, tears around the cover edges and toning to pages. The paperback book's original sewn binding was repaired long ago with neat hand-stitching along the spine. Santa Claus and His Works by Geo. P.
