Hill, 1955, Signed Limited Ed. #361/5001st Edition, Limited Edition, Hardcover, VG2) Copy of the Henry W. Hill 5-cent Jeffersion Stamp Collection (1856-1861) Auction Catalog 1959 First Item Title: The United States Five Cent Stamps of 1856-1861, Henry W. Hill, 1955, Limited Edition, Signed. One of the first authoritative books written on the 5-cent Jefferson stamp of 1856. This stamp is a bit of a mystery as to why it was issued and who the designer was. There are multiple theories but the one of the prevailing theories is that it was issued to prepay the 5-cent open mail rate for mails carried by British packets. This service was most often used for carriage of mail to France (as well as other destinations) served by British steamers at this time. There are a number of covers with French addresses posted with this 5-cent stamp, supporting the theory. A Limited Edition issue, #361 / 500 published and signed by the author Henry W. Hill in 1955, the only publication of this book. This volume deals with both the imperforate stamp of 1856 and the 5-cent perforated stamp issued between 1857 and 1861. Size 4to - 8.5” x 10.625” tall. Used copy in Very Good condition. The red buckram cloth type cover is clean with the title in gold embossing on front cover, no chipping or loss of gold embossing. There is light wear on the spine ends and corners, light bumping on the corners. One small scuff on front cover. Spine is solid with a light slant, hinges are solid with no cracking or starting. Text block is tight and clean with no writing or marks, no folded pages, some age toning. Endpapers are good with no writing, there is a previous owner’s address label on inside back cover. No dust jacket as issued. Second Item Title: The Henry W. Hill Collection of Five Cent Jefferson Stamps 1856-1861 Issues at Public Auction Wednesday February 11th, 1959. Hill's collection, imperforate and perforate stamp issues, many covers, with illustrations of all lots. Includes Prices Realized from the Robert Siegel auction in New York. Great reference.
