From its humble beginning in 1827, it was a railroad of innovations and firsts, i.e. it was the first railroad to carry the U.S. Mail (South Carolina Canal & Rail Road Company). This company was also the first to carry passengers in regular scheduled service, on Christmas Day 1830. There were other firsts for the early lines, and for the Southern Railway when it came into being in 1894. In the South the early lines built track across the Southern states from 1830 until the beginning of the War Between the States. Then the War flooded down upon these roads and they went to war until the end in 1865, thus the world's first railroad war. After the War, railroads like the South lay in ruins, but like a Phoenix the South's railroads rose from their own ashes to become one of the nation's best railway systems. The Southern Railway began operation in 1894, when it acquired many of these early lines. This work follows the building of the early lines, the problems, the struggle for money and the struggle with landowners, the lack of material, the Civil War, the rebuilding and mergers, and famous wrecks like the "Old 97". This work follows the history of the Southern Railway from 1827 until its merger with the Norfolk & Western Railway in June 1982. Also, the work is illustrated with photos of trains and cars from a time that is now gone forever. Most of the old photos were supplied by some very good friends. About 90 percent of these photos have never before been published. This work was written for the railroad employees who would like to know more about the company, for the railfan, for the Southern Railway railfan, and for anyone who is interested in railroads and American history.
