"I've seen the northern lights in a lot of places, but none of the displays I've seem has been quite a spectacular as the scene I've painted here. It's not intended to be a specific place, but it is based on mountains in the Alaska range. It's so far north that the trees don't grow very tall because of the harsh environment and the short seasons. Anyways, there are a lot of interesting things about the northern lights that scientists have discovered, but I'm more interested in the emotional side of it. A lot of native cultures regard the as spirits: relatives who are up in the heaves, or spirits waiting to be born, or spirits of the "dream time" - the aboriginal myths and legends who speak to you only when you're in that altered consciousness. Even the Scots describe them as "the merry dancers in the sky"." -- Stephen Lyman, died in 1996 from a hiking accident in Yosemite National Park at age 38.
