"And a piece of rope," added Tarzan. Here we offer the TRUE first edition, first print, of the American classic, Tarzan of the Apes, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by A.C. McClurg & Company, Chicago, in 1914. The reason I stress "true" is because subsequent printings of these are falsely represented all over eBay as firsts, because the book was continued in its same form--even with the 1914 date and a reference to A.C.McClurg on the copyright page--by other publishers up through the 1940's. You know it is a true first if both the title page and spine state McClurg is the publisher. This is also a first state of the first printing, of only 5,000 copies without the acorn in the McClurg name at the base of the spine; and with a first state heavier, thicker pulp and first state copyright page with the printer's name in an Old English typeface rather than the revised Gothic. The book comes wrapped in the highest quality facsimile of the first edition dust jacket printed on coated heavyweight bond. The polymer coating on the paper ensures the brightest colors and sharpest prints, as the ink sits atop the paper rather than being absorbed into the fibers. Book has been rebound with new acid-free hinges front and back, repaired spine reinforced with maroon book cloth, and new headbands. Original spine remnants have been reapplied atop new burgundy spine cloth (please see pics). Front flyleaf has been replaced. Binding is very tight and square. Text is very bright and crisp with some stains and fingerprints, a repaired page edge on the half-title page, and a bookworm hole in the margin of about 40 pages (please see pic). 401 pages. Measures approximately 7.5 x 5.25-inches. Dust jacket comes sleeved in ph-neutral Mylar and ready to slip into your collection.
