But it wasn't until her college years that Laura began to paint seriously. First painting abstractly with acrylics, Laura then began to use watercolor as well as acrylic to paint realistically. Eventually Laura began using her acrylics as under-paintings for oils and now oil paint is her media of choice. Laura's formal art instruction began at Duke University, and continued with The University of Georgia in Cortona, Italy as well as with The University of Texas at Austin, Austin Community College, and Austin Museum of Art's Laguna Gloria Art School (now The Contemporary's Art School}. Laura is currently a member of Oil Painters of America, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, American Impressionist Society, and Plein Air Austin. Laura's Big Bend Opuntia won "Best Outdoor Still Life" in the Plein Air Salon of Dec/Jan 2020. Her work has been juried into both the NOAPS Best of America Exhibition as well as the International Online Open Call Exhibition put on by NOAPS, and OPA's 2020 Virtual Salon show. The painting She Waits for Eternity depicting the iconic Spider Rock of Canyon de Chelly was juried into Oil Painters of America Annual National Exhibit and shown at the Steamboat Art Museum in Steamboat Springs Colorado in 2022.
