Description: The Glorious Mystery by Arthur Machen (Covici-McGee, 1924) - 1st Ed.. forward by Vincent Starrett. Measurements: 7.75” x 5.5” 219 pages. A collection of fiction and non-fiction short stories , many appearing here for the first time . Most centered around religion and Christianity, specifically the Holy Grail Mythos. Arthur Manchen was born in 1863 in South Wales and died in 1947. He is considered a mix of High Church Anglicanism and a belief in an old Welsh Church that predates modern Christianity. ( note: this last factor will become more relevant when reading the ‘ Condition’ of this book!) Condition: Excellent: no rips, missing or loose pages, stains, owners identification. Flaws: light wear to spinal corners, loss of brightness to spinal lettering, writer found pencil notations on 11 pages* * I have made photo’s to provide examples. As opposed to a distraction, I found these short thoughts quite enjoyable, enlightening and entertaining considering the authors religious background. The unidentified writer is a firm and knowledgeable Protestant who shares his view that Machen is a ‘R.C. ‘ who ‘ Hates’ Protestant reformation. As an ‘R.C.’ They provided a unique and immediate critique. Examples: Pg. 60 : “ He has neither the fact nor the indium correct” Pg. 72: “ and of course all R.C. Churches & parish houses are models of taste and beauty…” Pg 54: “I.e. Anglican. Then he means R.C. He says so.” Pg. 129: “ By which he means that he kept church & state separate!” Pg. 137: “NOT ‘Blasphemies’ from the point of view, since she does not accept the authority that Pusey does , thou she believes that Jesus is he Savior, her Judge. This is a typical “jurisdictional dispute” Remember, all in pencil…….
