Description: The Stand a novel by the author of The Shining by Stephen King (preceded by Carrie, Salem's Lot, The Shining.) Hardcover First Edition - First Printing New York: Doubleday, 1978 823 pages. $12.95 cover price. Approximately 45,000 trade first printing copies were issued, uncommon for Stephen King books. NOTE: This copy IS a first printing, NOT a BCE, and NOT an X-lib copy. Does have gutter code "T39"; "39" is easy to see but the "T" is farther into the gutter. Priced to sell. Issue Points: Tan boards with black cloth spine in a dust jacket featuring artwork with a kind of Luke Skywalker-like warrior in white and wielding a sword dueling a reptilian creature of sorts in black wielding a scythe, representing Randall Flagg. Lettering of author and title in black on front, and author in red on spine. "First Edition" stated on the copyright page which indicates both a first edition and a first printing copy. $12.95 cover price on the front flap, and on the back flap, author picture and ISBN code on the bottom centered. The blurb on the back of the jacket and the title are both centered. T39 code between the final two text pages. ("39" is visible but I would have to yank the book more open to see the "T". As far as I know, "39" was the only number used for the alpha-numeric code indicating a first printing.) Fine- in Fine-/Near Fine++ Dust Jacket. An exceptionally nice copy, with the typical shortcomings which plague the book and jacket because Doubleday was still not laminating their jackets and using relatively cheap paper and binding materials. Still one of the better examples I've seen compared to most copies of the early editions/printings. Boards are quite clean and intact, very slight hint of tenderness to corners, the lettering on the spine is very bright and clear. Pages are for the most part clean with some age-toning to the edges. Dust Jacket Condition: The price-intact dust jacket is nearly fine condition, NO tears and NO chips. There is some age-toning, particularly noticeable on the spine and back. If the jacket was brighter, I'd be asking $2000+. All things considered an exceptionally nice copy not often found as such. NOTE on Edition: The first edition/first printing of the original novel as published by Doubleday in 1978 was heavily edited by King. His original draft which would have clocked in at about 1250+ published pages (probably 2000+ in manuscript) was cut at the behest of Doubleday who felt the price for a book of more than 1200 pages would be prohibitively expensive to most buyers. After circa 1980 when word got out that the book had been heavily downsized, readers began inquiring about the missing material. Because of fan pressure, King reinserted the missing material in a new edition published in 1990 called "The Stand Uncut". The present copy is one of the original copies of the book as published in 1978. Personally I think the original edition is the better book, much more lean and to the point. NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers. ALSO: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The pictures are NOT stock photos.) IMPORTANT NOTE: All sales are generally FINAL. I do NOT accept returns because of buyer's remorse, "it was a gift but the recipient already had it", or "I found the same book at a better price", or using my microscope I found a tiny mark on the back end-paper. Prices are based on current supply and demand. Returns are only accepted because of discrepancies regarding edition and/or condition of which I try to be very thorough in researching the edition/printing as well as describing ALL condition issues to the best of my ability. So make sure you're 100% positive you desire one of my items before making a purchase. If you have questions or desire further pictures, please send me a message before purchase. NOTE on USPS Shipping: Free shipping in medium priority box. $30.00 Canada, or $100 UK and international. (I recommend eBay's global shipping.) I ship on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays sometimes on Friday. I do not ship on Mondays and Saturdays.) NOTE on FEEDBACK: If you have problem with an order for any reason, please contact me before leaving feedback! 99% of the time we can resolve the problem. It is much more difficult to change feedback once left. A Word on First Editions: 95% of my offerings are trade editions, and 90% of those are first printings and a few are special deluxe editions. In general I do NOT sell bookclub editions or cheap reprints like Modern Library except in rare instances which would be explicitly stated as such. In general, I also DO NOT sell x-library copies. If the book is both a first edition AND a first printing, it will be marked as “first edition” in the Item Specifics under “Special Attributes”, otherwise assume a later printing or a later edition.
