Their 2014 debut, TRANSMISSIONS, is a thought-provoking broadcast of cinematic Rock full of epic intents, poignant thoughts and personal nuances. Like any great piece of art, it begs more questions than it actually answers: precisely the intent of vocalist and songwriter Dustin Bates, who formed the band in 2013 in Columbus, Ohio. Produced by Rob Graves (Red, All That Remains) and mixed by Ben Grosse (30 Seconds to Mars, Fuel), the album showcases the audio accompaniment to a tale set amongst humanity's highest aspirations and utter ruin through songs like the current Active-Rock hit, 'My Demons' and the sprawling 'Halo'. Bates' voice is at once plaintive and bellicose: A rage against the machine of slashing guitars, strings and pulsing electronics. The band's line-up is rounded out by bassist Ron DeChant, guitarist Brock Richards and drummer Adam Gilbert. --- Cinematic sci-fi rockers Starset deliver their debut Transmissions, a concept album brimming with ambition and detail. Under the directive of a character named Dr. Ashton Wise, the Ohio-based band claims to be acting as the mouthpiece for the Starset Society, a fictional collective whose aim is to publish major scientific discoveries that have been silenced by the government and other agents. The album is centered around a supposed transmission of human origin that was broadcast from the constellation Ophiuchus, which foretells the future and demise of mankind. Led by charismatic frontman Dustin Bates (frontman for Downplay), Starset set up an elaborate online presence (complete with scientific videos, documents, links to shadowy agencies, etc.) leading up to the album's eventual release. The first two singles, "Carnivore" and "My Demons," appeared in 2013, introducing the band's dramatic style, which includes electronic elements, strings, heavy alt-rock, and more mysterious samples than an entire season of X-Files. ~ Timothy Monger, AllMusic Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
