Description: True vintage wartime 1940's to post-war early 1950's synthetic knitted dressy party dress. I find no label and think it was made by a home tailor. Condition is excellent with minimal wear. There are a few knots in back and on the inside where the knitter has tied off the ends of yarn during the knitting process, which is normal. No holes, tears or odors. This dress tells so much about the history of clothing during WWII. It is made from a synthetic yarn which I have seen only a few times in clothing from that era. Synthetics became very creative and versatile at that time because of rationing and the use of natural fabrics for the war effort. Seamstresses also became creative in order to have pretty clothing when very little was available in stores. This 2 pc. dress has been knitted, probably by hand. The fabric is a smooth, heavy yarn with a glossy surface. Style is a 1940's - early Fifties version of the sweater dress, closely fitted with a defined waist. The sleeveless top has a scalloped open-weave design in front and plain knit in the back, with ribbing around the neckline and armholes. The skirt has a ribbed waist with elastic sewn inside. It is close-fitting and straight with alternating stripes of knit and purl, which give it some natural stretch. Best fit on a tall-ish slim figure. The only flaw is a bit of light grayish color near the shoulder which looks as though the fabric has been rubbed against some metal. See photo. Might be from a hanger but there is NO rust. Dress has NOT been dry-cleaned. It is pictured on a vintage mannequin which wears a modern size 2 and is about 5' 8" tall. The measurements of this dress are approximate and were taken lying flat. Because of the slim fit, I think it would fit a size 0 - 2 best. Please see photos and details above and compare to a dress which fits you well. Please ask any questions you may have as my schedule does not allow me to accept returns. Thank you.
