Description: There is a lot of history just in this one piece! After the Spanish-American War, the US assumed controlled over the Philippines. Shortly after, in 1899, the Philippine Insurrection began. The US Marines were sent to the Philippines to put down that rebellion. However, in 1900, those Marines (USMC 1st Regiment) were sent to China as part of the 8-Nation Alliance during the Boxer Rebellion. This silk and bullion Veteran's Flag measures 20" x 25". It is is great condition, especially considering its age. It has a raw edge and looks like it was originally framed. The top reads "U.S. Marins Olongapo P.I." Note Marines being misspelled and P. I. is the Philippine Islands, as it was called by the US at this time. Olongapo is a city in the Philippines in which the 1st Marine Regiment was stationed. The flag has a large EGA in the center surrounded by 10 flags; 2 US, 7 from the other nations in the alliance, plus the flag of Imperial China. This item is so full of USMC history and is likely the only surviving example!
