Description: COPLAND: Appalachian Spring/IVES: Three Places in New England. Used vintage LP in Near Mint/Very Good condition. Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Dennis Russell Davies conducting. Pro Arte Digital LP Catalog # PAD 140 (originally released on Sound 80); 1983 Condition: Vinyl excellent in appearance, could pass for Mint but surfaces not as quiet as one would wish. Played all of once by original owner, myself. Jacket totally intact but has areas of age-related discoloration, slight hint of ring impression on front and back. Original inner sleeve with soft poly lining and my personal notes (see below) included. Behind the Music: Picture this. It is 1980 and the audio world is abuzz with the news that Sony and Philips will be introducing the Compact Disc Audio System soon (it actually reached the US in 1982). Recordings are being made to digital master tapes and issued on analog LP records. Some of them came out superb, others succumbed to the inherent flaws of vinyl: surface noise, warpage, etc. In Minneapolis, a company called Sound 80 is established to start taking advantage of digital recording techniques. They invest in the very expensive at the time 3M Digital Audio Mastering System (rolls off the tongue with ease, right?). For their first project, they sign Dennis Russell Davies to lead the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra to record the original chamber orchestra arrangement of Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring,” with New England native Charles Ives’s “Three Places in New England” filling Side Two. The recording engineer is Tom Jung, who went on to found the dmp (Digital Music Products) label, specializing in Jazz, headquartered in Connecticut. The result? I jotted these notes on the original inner sleeve for my future reference: “This recording is one of the marvels of past decade. It sold out very quickly when released in 1980 on ‘Sound 80’ label and was unobtainable for next 3-4 years.” This release won numerous awards for its audio quality, and the musical values were also highly praised. Enter the Pro Arte Digital record label in 1983, reissuing the original, still on analog LP. [See my note above under description of “condition.”] When the actual CD version of this recording finally appeared, I wasted no time snapping up a copy. Like many early digital recordings, the credits on back of LP jacket break down details of all the equipment employed, right down to what model microphones were used for which orchestral instruments. This record is listed as having very little value elsewhere on the internet. I firmly disagree, but am asking a very modest price for it to conform to reality. About the seller: I am downsizing my personal belongings, and you can benefit. Unless otherwise indicated, all my records have been owned by me alone and treated with loving care. No scratches or gouges. I have been a Jazz radio broadcaster for 30+ years, but my musical tastes are wide-ranging. You will see this as my listed offerings grow. New items added weekly, check back often! PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely. FREE SHIPPING to U.S. address for purchase of any item of $100 or more.
