U.S.S. NIAGARA * War of 1812 Relic * Historic Rare Authentic Naval Ship

Description: U.S.S. Niagara War of 1812 An actual piece of the historic War of 1812 U.S.S. Niagara! The original U.S.S. Niagara, also known as the U.S. Brig Niagara, was constructed in 1812-13 at Presque Isle, Erie, Pennsylvania. She was built to help protect the American shoreline against a British invasion during the War of 1812. Black oak logs were used in construction of the keel. Its 110 ft. length accommodated 18 x32 pound cannonades and 2 x12 pound long guns. Oliver Hazard Perry assumed command of the Lake Erie fleet in 1813. On Sept. 10th the Battle of Lake Erie was underway against the British fleet. After several hours, Perry’s ship, the Lawrence, was out of commission and Perry lowered his battle flag with the now famous words – “Don’t Give Up The Ship” and boarded the Niagara as his new flagship. She opened fire and fought valiantly until the British fleet surrendered. The War of 1812 ended with the Treaty of Ghent and the Niagara served as a receiving ship until 1820 when she was sunk at Presque Isle for preservation. In 1913, the centennial of the battle, she was raised and reconstructed. Much of the original wood was not used in the rebuilding and was sold as souvenirs at the time. Eventually, ownership of the Niagara was transferred to the Pennsylvania Historical Commission. She now serves proudly as a museum ship and is one of only 2 remaining ships from the War of 1812. This small piece of wood on the front of the display is from the original U.S.S. Niagara raised in 1913. It was cut from a larger piece shown as an image on the back of the display. Now you have an opportunity to own an original relic from this historic U.S. Naval vessel! The actual small wood relic is mounted on a 5x7 inch descriptive COA display that can easily be framed. Each piece of wood will vary slightly depending on how it was cut from the original larger piece, but is roughly ½ inch long. The display is protected by a stiff plastic protector. The actual piece of wood is mounted on the top right side of the front image of the Niagara. The back has a brief history of the ship, showing 2 early images and an image of the original wood piece in my possession. The original wood piece in the image on the back is NOT part of the auction. The wood piece you will receive is mounted on the front of the display. This would look great matted and framed and would make a very special gift for anyone interested in U.S. Naval history!
