Description: 1. This is a postcard of Pyotr Tchaikovsky with cotton wool in his ear. January 1889, lifetime edition. The fact is that Pyotr Ilyich was comically absent-minded. This is noted by many of his contemporaries. This was combined with the composer’s pathological suspiciousness: he explained to his personal doctor Vasily Bertenson that he was afraid of catching a cold in his throat and especially his ears, that he could go deaf from a trifling cold, that he did not want to repeat the fate of Beethoven. Bertenson assured that these were just fears, but, however, in order to calm Pyotr Ilyich, in the late 1880s he advised him to plug his ears with cotton wool during winter walks. The photograph was taken in January 1889 in St. Petersburg by photographer A. Pasetti and was later rejected by Tchaikovsky. This photograph was released, but in a restored form without cotton in the ear. The photograph with cotton wool in the ear remained the property of the Tchaikovsky family and a narrow circle of friends. A photo with cotton wool in the ear is very rare.
