Description: Vintage handmade coin doll from Bali ( Indonesia ).Figure composed of Chinese cash coins of the Qing dynasty tied together with string. The figure is literally " made of money ."About 16" long. Over 80 Chinese coins. Most of the coins have a square hole however a couple have a round hole. The coins with a round hole may be older than Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), however I am not an expert in Chinese coins. The coins are unidentified. The figure has a stylized hand-carved wood face, hands and feet. The Indonesian " Prosperity Doll " is sometimes referred to as a " Wedding Doll ", as it was custom to give as a marriage gift or given as gifts to wish prosperity upon the recipient.Chinese cash coins continued to circulate in the Dutch East Indies long after they were demonetized in China and were later used in Bali until 1970. They are still used for Hindu rituals today. This example is as-found and is mostly intact, however there are two areas where a string has broken.1. the figure's right arm has loosened somewhat.2. the figure's left leg is very loosened ( one string still holds and keeps the leg coins attached, however is it dangling - see the photos )Some string could be used to re-tighten the loose areas.Otherwise very good. Carefully packed for shipment to the buyer. ----- Historical information : Qing dynasty coins are copper alloy coins with a square hole in the middle and an inscription, minted from molds during the Manchu Qing dynasty (1644–1912). They are based on a bimetallic standard of copper and silver, and are often referred to by the inscription on the front. Qing dynasty coins are a relic of China's last imperial dynasty. The monetary system during this time was based on copper-alloy cash coins for small transactions and silver sycees for larger transactions. The coins were denominated in wen for small transactions and taels for larger transactions. After the Qing dynasty was abolished in 1912, its currency was replaced by the Chinese yuan of the Republic of China.Chinese cash coins continued to circulate in the Dutch East Indies long after they were demonetized in China and were later used in Bali until 1970. Qing dynasty coins are used to make good luck or prosperity charms.Qing dynasty era cash coins have inscriptions of the five emperors Shunzhi , Kangxi , Yongzheng , Qianlong , and Jiaqing , which are said to bring wealth and good fortune to those that string the coins together.
