Description: This is a slit drum, or garamut, from the Trobriand region of Papua New Guinea. The garamut is considered to be a sacred instrument, representing the voice of the spirits. It is usually stored in the male lodgings and, in some communities, there are strict taboos against women seeing or playing it! It measures approximately 16" Long x 4.5" Tall x 3.75" Deep There is a note/tag on the bottom of the item. It was a gift to someone. It says "This native drum I brought in Papua New Guinea for you 1991". It can be removed by the new owner. Condition This item is preowned. It is in excellent, vintage condition. May show signs of wear. There are two chips on the piece (see photos). There are a few others that appear to be intentionally done to the piece but they may be blemishes as well (see photos).
