Description: This is an unsigned pencil drawing, bought from Peter Bruning's estate.Β There is minor wrinkling and smearing. The paper is faded with some discoloration around the outside. Drawing is approximately 9"x7β Circa 1950s Peter Bruning was a Dutch-American artist and academic born and raised in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. As a child, he had a passion for drawing and playing the piano, deeply influenced by the fine art museums and concert halls in Amsterdam. After graduating from Montessori High School in Amsterdam, he pursued a teaching career, completing his doctorate in Germanic studies with minors in art history and sociology at the University of Amsterdam in 1949. Bruning's artistic education continued in Amsterdam and later in Bern, Switzerland, and Paris, France, after World War II. In 1950, he moved to the United States as a visiting instructor at Indiana State University, where he met his future wife, Margaret Jones, an art major. His academic career included teaching German and Dutch languages at Indiana University Bloomington, the University of California Berkeley, and German Language and Literature at Rice University in Houston, where he became a U.S. citizen in 1955. In 1956, Bruning joined the Foreign Language Department at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, where he taught until his retirement in 1990. Alongside his academic career, he actively pursued his passion for art. Having grown up on the Dutch coast of the North Sea, Bruning was captivated by the subtle nuances of color, shape, and the emotional impact of land, sky, and water intersections. He often painted coastal locations such as the Cote d'Azur, the Caribbean, the Greek isles, and Cape Cod, seeking to depict these landscapes and cityscapes from unique, unexpected perspectives. Bruning's work is remembered for its thoughtful exploration of coastal environments, blending his academic insights with his artistic vision to create a distinctive body of work.
